What should you Know about Moving with Children?

Moving is never easy. Especially when there are children involved. The key however is to prepare in advance. A little preparation can make moving day a lot less stressful for you, and the little ones in your life. Here are 4 things to do when moving with children.

Let Them Know What’s Going On

Children are extremely intelligent. If they see some of their things in boxes, they will know something is up. To avoid stressing them out, talk to them and let them know what’s going on. Let them know you will be moving into a new house and you need to pack everything up.

Give Them a Virtual Tour of the New Space

If at all possible, take photos of the new home and show them to your child. Put them on the fridge so they can see them often. If you are moving close to your old home, consider taking your child on a ride to see the new place. If that’s not possible and you are unable to take pictures on your own, pull up Google streetview and get pictures that way.

Stay Positive & Be Patient

Moving is not only difficult on children, but it’s difficult on adults as well. That’s why you must make a conscious effort to stay positive. Try not to pass on any worries to your children. If you are stressed out, your child will take on those emotions.

If they are a little nervous, let them know it’s okay. It’s also okay for them to feel a little confused. It’s all a part of the process. After all this is a completely new process for them. Just remember to remain patient and prepare in advance. Doing so will make this transition a lot smoother.

Get Help

Make sure you have plenty of hands on board when moving day arrives. This way you will be able to still spend time with your children at both the old and new home. If you can, have their beds set up so they can sleep in it the first night. This will make the first night feel more like the home they are used to.
