Kiniski Gardens Community History

The piece of land that is now known as Kiniski Gardens was first founded by the Government of Alberta in 1970 as part of a bigger community that is now called Mill Woods and has had a relatively short history. In 1970, the whole Mill Woods district became a part of Edmonton and was subdivided for sale. Kiniski Gardens is one of the subdivisions that was then converted into residential and commercial areas. It was only around 1975 when construction actually started in Kiniski Gardens. Development in the area continued until the 1990s.

The neighbourhood was named after a well-known local politician named Julia Kiniski. She was well-celebrated for her perseverance when running for a position in Alderman City. She ran 10 consecutive times and each time with no success. It was only in 1963, on her 11th attempt, that Julia Kiniski finally won. As a result, the female politician was fondly called Big Julie and was later re-elected 3 more times.

Kiniski Gardens Neighbourhood Homes

Single-family detached dwellings are the norm in this area accounting for about 95% of the residential units. It naturally follows that most of the Kiniski Gardens homes for sale are also single-detached. The other small remainder of homes in the area is comprised of low-rise apartments and duplexes.

Since this neighbourhood is known to be one of the most desirable places to live in Edmonton, almost 90% of the homes in Kiniski Gardens are owner-occupied.

Kiniski Gardens Community Amenities

Kiniski Gardens is laced with nature parks and open spaces as common areas. The community features the beautiful Kulawy Lake towards the southwest. Even further south and west is the long-winding Mill Creek, which provides residents with more natural space to enjoy.

At the centre of Kiniski Gardens is the Creek's Crossing Park. Aside from this main park, several other pocket parks are scattered around the neighbourhood. As well, residents of Kiniski Gardens can easily reach Annie May Jackson Park and Larkspur Lake within a matter of minutes due to their close proximities.

There is one public school and one Catholic school within the confines of the neighbourhood including the Blessed Kateri Catholic Elementary and Junior High School and the Julia Kiniski Elementary School. The Strawberry Street Daycare and After School Care is also right within the area.

To the east of Kiniski Gardens, along 3 Street, are a number of fast food chains, restaurants, convenience shops, and grocery stores that cater to the various needs of community residents. Transportation-wise, this community is well-serviced with bus stops along 38 Avenue, Kaasa Road, 44 Street, and 34 Street. Managed by the Burnewood Community League.
