Inglewood Community History

This Inglewood community was added to the growing City of Edmonton in two stages throughout its history. The first began in 1904 and then the second occurred in 1920. The origin of Inglewood can be traced back to 1882 when Scottish-born Hudson Bay Company employee J. Norris Sr. and R. Logan acquired it. The name Inglewood, whose origin is unknown, first appeared in 1905 on a subdivision plan and was then later used for the area.

Inglewood started developing as a low residential neighbourhood in the 1950s. Before then, First Nations predominantly used the area for campsites as they conducted business in the city. Development at that time was encouraged by 2 factors. From 1913 to 1948, an electric streetcar service was extended to Alberta Avenue and from the 1950s onwards, the area's proximity to shopping and employment centres encouraged the construction of apartment buildings and other residential properties along major traffic routes. By the 2000s, many residential buildings in this community were redeveloped into medium and high-density homes.

Inglewood Neighbourhood Homes

Inglewood is another older and established Edmonton neighbourhood that prides itself on the quality of its historic homes and buildings. In fact, the Bel Air complex close to Groat Road is one of the city's best examples of the large-scale apartment projects that were built back in the 1950s. This is reflected in the area today where you'll find 62% Inglewood condos and apartments and 23% single family homes.

Inglewood Community Amenities

Homes for sale in the Inglewood community are close to a wealth of amenities. Inglewood is also home to four schools including Inglewood Elementary, Westmount Junior High, St. Andrew Catholic School and Norwood Chinese School. A range of other educational choices are located in the communities next-door. One of the other major benefits of living in this area is the excellent transit service offering regular bus routes into the city. This makes Edmonton attractions and facilities including downtown Edmonton, Edmonton General Hospital, NAIT and the Westmount Shopping Centre easily accessible.

The community is also family-friendly with a number of parks and attractive green spaces. Inglewood Park and the nearby Coronation Park are key attractions for residents while the Telus World of Science and Planetarium offer fantastic science exhibits and the chance to see the latest science films in the IMAX theatre.
