McCauley Community History

McCauley is a great community for history buffs! Surpassed only by Downtown Edmonton in its number of historic sites, McCauley nevertheless has 7 sites designated as Municipal Historic Resources. These buildings are protected legally against inappropriate alterations and demolition. These sites are eligible for municipal assistance as well. Featured in Ripley's "Believe It or Not," McCauley's religious buildings are concentrated on 96 Street.

Some of the historic sites include the Charles J. Carter Residence (built in 1909), the John McNeill Residence constructed in 1907, the Lambton Block (1914), the William Paskins Residence (1902), the McTaggart Residence (1922), Hull Block (1914), and Rehwinkle Parsonage (1913), which served not only as a guesthouse but as an immigration centre and an employment bureau for Lutheran immigrants.

McCauley Neighbourhood

Single-detached homes including bungalows and two-storey homes were constructed in the neighbourhood in 1910 and in the 1940s comprised the majority of the McCauley homes for sale. Although some of the houses were demolished in recent years, new ones have been built to replace them. An incentive to reside in McCauley is strengthened by the 2010 approval by the Edmonton City Council of McCauley's Revitalization Strategy.

Industrial and commercial land uses compete with one another in McCauley even as it remains dominated by homes and residential buildings. Half of 95 Street is largely dominated by Italian and Portuguese businesses while its other half has Chinese enterprises.

McCauley Community Amenities

McCauley's proximity to the Commonwealth Stadium and other amenities is yet another reason why people are choosing to live in the community. Primarily used by the Edmonton's Eskimos, the Commonwealth Stadium has played host to the Grey Cup 4 times since it opened in 1978.

The stadium's transit terminal makes it convenient for people to commute since it sits alongside the LRT station. Recreation and fun can be found at the Joe Clarke Athletic Grounds, a.k.a. Clarke Field, and the Giovanni Caboto Park especially for the young ones. Festivals and other community events are regularly held in both venues.

Edmonton has quite a number of neighbourhoods but McCauley is especially noteworthy for the support it provides to its entrepreneurs that want to run a business and make their homes in the same place. With McCauley's Revitalization Strategy, business and pleasure can be mixed and enjoyed by all its residents. The neighborhood is managed by the McCauley Community League.
