Oliver Neighbourhood History

The Oliver neighbourhood has an interesting history. Named after the founder of Alberta's first newspaper, Francis "Frank" Oliver, the neighbourhood was developed in the 1880s with first the construction of several commercial buildings followed by homes. The development of houses began even prior to World War I and continued well into the 1930s until the 1950s as the population grew.

This growth was a direct result of job opportunities available in Edmonton's downtown vicinity. This led to the redevelopment of many buildings, particularly single-detached houses, for the growing number of workers that were needed in the downtown core. These houses were replaced with apartments or condos to suit the needs of a neighbourhood that had become quite populated.

Oliver Community

Currently, the Oliver community has several options in terms of apartments and condominium units. Most people living here work in downtown Edmonton. Alta Vista, The Venetian, and Serenity Gates are some of the newer condo units.

Housing is more affordable in this part of downtown Oliver primarily because of the age of the neighbourhood. Most construction began in the 1960s and progressed steadily due to the large demand for homes. Today, there are still single-detached homes as well as townhouses in Oliver even though some of them have been converted into small business offices. As well, the first floors of many business buildings are being converted into condo residences.

Oliver Neighbourhood Amenities

Like the other neighbourhoods in downtown Edmonton, Oliver offers several amenities such as strip shopping centers, restaurants, and small shops, amongst others. Oliver residents have easy and quick access to the Centre Airport on Blatchford Field, Victoria Park, the University of Alberta, the Pandora Kingsway Mall, and the Royal Alberta Museum, to name a few.

Neighbourhood residents also have quick access to the Oliver Square Shopping Centre, Oliver Park with an arena and a swimming pool, Kitchener Park, the General Hospital as well as a number of community coffee shops, service centres, restaurants and small business establishments. Schools such as Alberta College, Northern Lakes College, and the University of Alberta are also only a short commute away.

Other than offering buyers affordable housing, the free recreational programs for adults, children and seniors make it an ideal place to live. Additionally, living in the Oliver community means there is something for everybody, from the history aficionado (the Prince of Wales Armouries) to the golfing enthusiast (Rundle Park Golf Course) to the gym rat (O'Leary Fitness and Leisure Centre).
