Kernohan Neighbourhood History

This neighbourhood got its name from a farmer and coal miner named James Kernohan, who was one of the first few settlers to cultivate the area and an important figure in the community's history. James Kernohon was originally from Ontario and moved to Alberta in 1884. He was also the first to build a grocery store in this part of Edmonton, which ran successfully for 15 years.

Like its surrounding neighbourhoods, the Kernohan site officially became a part of Edmonton in 1960. Twelve years later, the land was named Kernohan and was declared a part of the Clareview district. As the city started experiencing rapid economic growth due to the oil industries, residential structures began rising in Kernohan. The first Kernohan homes were built in the 1970s and further developments grew in the 1980s until the early 1990s.

Kernohan Community Homes

A large majority of the Kernohan community homes, 62%, were constructed as single-family dwellings and most were built from 1977 to 1995. Approximately 89% of the housing is owner-occupied. Other types of homes include townhouses, duplexes, apartments, and condominiums. The main townhouse complexes in the neighbourhood are Clareview Lane, Gryphons Walk, and Canon Ridge while, duplexes are available in Victoria and Ravine Estates.

Kernohan Neighbourhood Amenities

Schools, parks, recreational facilities, amenities and shopping centres are all easily accessible to Kernohan neighbourhood residents. Right at the centre of the community you'll find Anne Fitzgerald Catholic Elementary School. Adjacent to this educational facility is Kernohan Park, which is always open for everyone to enjoy.

Other parks that are near the neighbourhood include Hermitage Park and Belmont Park. Residents can also enjoy the biking and hiking trails by the North Saskatchewan River and for avid golfers the Raven Crest Golf and Country Club is also close to the Kernohan area.

Because the neighbourhood is highly residential, only a couple of commercial areas are set up within the community itself. The Canon Ridge Shopping Plaza is located right within the neighbourhood and Kernohan residents can also head out to the Clareview Village Shopping Centre.

Just outside the northern border of the neighbourhood, along 137 Avenue, you'll find other entertainment venues including a movie theatre. Public transportation is conveniently located with buses regularly passing along 137 Avenue, Victoria Trail and Clareview Road and the rest of the city can also be accessed from Kernohan via the nearby Clareview LRT Station.
