Overlanders Community History
The community of Overlanders has a deep history. While residential construction boomed right after World War II, city planners in Edmonton realized that the increasing number of workers in the industrial areas of the city required even more residential land than what was then available. The 1960s saw a definite shortage in residential properties, and this resulted in the development of the Hermitage Plan, which gave rise to various neighbourhoods within the city. Overlanders was a part of this residential housing boom.
The name was chosen to commemorate the hardy group of miners that traveled by cart from Fort Gary through the Red River, heading for the Cariboo gold fields. In 1862, some of these miners with visions of gold dancing in their heads made it to their final destinations while others instead chose to settle in the community of Edmonton.
Overlanders Neighbourhood Homes
There are three main housing options when it comes to Overlanders neighbourhood homes for sale. Most homes here are single-family houses, but there are definitely plenty of townhomes and duplexes available here too. More than half of the residential units in the neighbourhood, however, are condos or rental apartments.
The 1970s saw the construction of most of the single-family homes and some of the first townhouses. The rest of the townhouses and some of the apartment buildings were built in the 1980s. There was still some ongoing building occurring in the 1990s and even today you can see some lingering construction happening.
Overlanders Community Amenities
Amenities are convenient to homes for sale in the Overlanders community. Families with young children make full use of the nearby Overlanders School, although another half-dozen schools are also just a short drive away. Adults enjoy the short commute to their jobs in the nearby industrial areas, which can be reached easily by bus or via the Clareview LRT Station.
Neighbourhood parks include Overlanders Park along with Kennedale Park, Hermitage Park and River Valley parks. Biking and hiking trails are also available along the North Saskatchewan River while Rundle Park is also in the neighbourhood, offering tennis and golf facilities.
There are at least 5 large malls in the area, including Canon Ridge Shopping Plaza and Hermitage Road Shopping Centre, while more shops and restaurants can be found along 50 Street and 137 Avenue. All of the important amenities are in the neighbourhood when homeowners live in Overlanders – the community that pays tribute to the adventurous men in search of gold that had an entrepreneurial spirit and the courage to strive for something better.
