Hazeldean Community History

C. Anderson, I. Irvine, and W. Ogilvie were the known owners of the land holding that is now called Hazeldean and important figures in the community's history. It was originally part of the first river lot.

Developments began in this community when the Pacific, Yukon, and Edmonton Railroad were moved close to the Mill Creek Ravine. With this new connection better, transit across the city was established and development in Hazeldean became easier. Up to this day, the roads where the railroads once were are still fully functional.

Although some construction had already taken place in Hazeldean at an earlier time, this neighbourhood was only annexed to the City of Strathcona in 1907. After the merger between Strathcona and Edmonton was formalized in 1912, Hazeldean become a part of Edmonton City. The plot of land was subdivided into a strategic pattern and the estate owned by I. Irvine's family was the only piece of land left untouched.

The urbanization of Hazeldean was rather slow. Despite the early construction, the area was highly undeveloped until the 1950s. It was only in the middle of the decade when the construction of 80% of today's Hazeldean homes was started.

Hazeldean Neighbourhood Homes

Characterized by home styles of the 50s, the Hazeldean neighbourhood is a leading option for quiet and simple city living. Hazeldean homes for sale are well-surrounded by mature trees. Most homes are single-family detached houses but due to a greater demand from renters, townhouses were developed in the neighbourhood. Aside from single-detached homes and townhomes, a few duplexes can also be bought and rented in the Hazeldean area.

Hazeldean Community Amenities

To meet the immediate needs of Hazeldean residents, a number of amenities are available right inside the confines of the community. As well, a wide range of other services are located towards the community's southern and western borders along 63 Avenue and 99 Street. Other recreational activities are available to the east of Hazeldean, just across from the Mill Creek Ravine. Located in that area you'll find the Argyll Sports Centre and Argyll Park. Ecole J. H. Picard School and Hazeldean Elementary School are the 2 schools servicing the children in this neighbourhood.
