King Edward Park Neighbourhood History

As early as the 1870s, the neighbourhood now known as King Edward Park had already been occupied by a few families throughout its early history. Back then, the land was primarily used for agricultural purposes and the first known settler in this area was James Inkster. Owning most of this land, he subdivided it and sold the sections off in 1907.

Two years later, King Edward Park was annexed to the City of Strathcona. After Strathcona and Edmonton merged in the year 1913, the neighbourhood officially became a part of the city.

It was decades later when residential developments were initiated in King Edward Park. Around the 1950s, the agricultural lots started to slowly turn into land with residential structures. When the development of this neighbourhood saw some progress in 1960, the rest of the land to the east of 75th Street was declared part of Edmonton as a subdivision called King Edward Park. After this, developers ramped up the construction and from the 1970s until the 1980s, more and more homes were built in the area.

King Edward Park Community Homes

The King Edward Park community is dominated by a series of single-detached homes. Around 57% of all King Edward Park homes follow this housing format. The rest are a mix of duplexes, condos and apartments. The apartments for rent in King Edward Park can be found in low-rise buildings and there is a fair mix of renters and home owners.

King Edward Park Neighbourhood Amenities

Residents of the King Edward Park neighbourhood have access to a wide range of amenities and other services. There are 2 schools here - one that is run by the Edmonton Public School Board and one that is operated by the Edmonton Catholic School Board. Don Elementary Junior High School and St James Catholic Elementary School are both well-respected schools and the North Campus of University of Alberta is also close by.
