Buying a home on your own?  It’s all about lifestyle.  From the size and design of your home to the neighbourhood in which you live.  You want single-friendly, affordable and fun and Edmonton can definitely deliver.

What Singles Want

Single buyers are in a league of their own.  The lifestyle has a faster pace and singles are busy. Single have only themselves to organize and take care of.  Staying active is a priority so proximity to fitness amenities in a condo building or local gym is a priority.  Coffee shops, restaurants and nightlife is important.  And increasingly, so are bike trails, bike lanes and walkable neighbourhoods.  Inner-city communities in Edmonton offer that connected, urban vibe that many singles want.  However, some of Edmonton’s outer suburban neighbourhoods are on-trend with urban design and amenities that are also attracting the attention of young professional single buyers.

Glenridding Heights

Down in the South West corner of Edmonton is this new community that is quiet with green spaces and storm water ponds. But don’t let this serenity fool you.  Glenridding Heights is very close to shopping and entertainment.  Recreational amenities are nearby and the community is very close to the Anthony Henday Drive.   This is a community for the single buyer interested in a town home or an attached home with a front-drive garage.  This is the community for the type of single person who likes to entertain and have back yard barbecues.

Oliver

The dense inner-city neighbourhood has a lot of apartment buildings that were constructed in the 1950s.  City council approved the city’s tallest residential apartment tower this year in Oliver at Jasper and 114 Street.  Some of the smaller single-family homes are being replaced with infill homes.  Half of the population of Oliver are people under 40.  With an average home price of around $360,000 it’s a great place for a single person to start their home buying journey.

Garneau

This University-neighbourhood has plenty of condo buildings, perfect for the single buyer who craves the academic café lifestyle.  There are diners and pubs all within walking distance to the river valley.  Yet there are some pretty nice children’s playgrounds in Garneau, Edmonton’s oldest neighbourhood.  Downtown is close by as is the Whyte Avenue Cultural District.

Ritchie

This older community is next door to Strathcona and Mill Creek Ravine Park.  There’s excitement in the neighbourhood because of the all the urban renewal occurring in this area both in housing development and commercial projects. Once home to German immigrants who worked at a nearby meat-packing facility, the City of Edmonton is adding bike lanes and increasing the walkability factor.  Ritchie Market is under development and will be a god-send for singles with it’s café, cycle shop and more amenities.

Strathcona

It’s been 114 years since Strathcona and Edmonton merged into one great big city.  Somehow the personality, the charm and the character of Strathcona, the poor cousin on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River, never really went away.  It’s an historic district with cool places to live, whether it’s a new condo or a suite in an old house.  People are out on Whyte Avenue, the main drag through the district, every day of the week.  With the average home price still under $400,000 Strathcona still holds the title as thee best neighbourhood for singles in Edmonton.
