Leduc: 6 Kilometres from EIA

Leduc Amenities

  • The 28,700-square-meter Leduc Recreation Centre
  • Many lakes and parks, including Telford Lake and Fred Johns Park
  • Its own hospital, ambulance, and fire service
  • Access to downtown Edmonton via private car, bus, or tram

The city of Leduc is about 33 kilometres south of Edmonton. It was established in 1891 when Robert Telford bought land near a lake that would later be named after him. The settlement was a stopping point for the stagecoach line connecting Calgary to Alberta. The Calgary and Edmonton Railway, later part of the Canadian Pacific Railway, opened the region to further settlement. Two versions describe how the city received its name. The first is that in 1886 a settler setting up a telegraph office decided to name it after the first person who came through the door. That person was Father Hippolyte Leduc. Five years later, Edgar Dewdney, minister of the Interior and Superintendent of Indian Affairs, was given a list of names. Father Leduc's name was on the list, and since the telegraph station was already called Leduc, Dewdney also decided to name the hamlet Leduc. Leduc continued to grow and became a city in 1983. The current population is about 33,000 people.

Homes in the city are of various types, including single-family homes, condos, and townhomes. Houses for sale in Leduc might start at around $200,000 and span upwards of $1 million.

The Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts features a 460-seat theatre for plays, concerts, and other special events. Fine dining restaurants offering local cuisine include Sawmill Steak House and Sabor Restaurant. Moderately priced restaurants include the Leduc Diner and Barney's Pub and Grill.

Devon is a town on the North Saskatchewan River, about 26 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. It is the first Canadian community to be approved by a regional planning commission. Although the oil industry is still essential in Devon, the economy has diversified and includes research, tourism, and manufacturing. The town was named after the Devonian formation, which was the strata that tapped in the oil well. The formation, in turn, was named for the county of Devon in England. The population is about 6,650 people, and the Canadian Energy Museum preserves the town's storied past.

Devon has a historic downtown, as well as modern neighbourhoods. The homes for sale in Devon cost between $139,000 and upwards of $800,000. Housing types include single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes, and condos.

Many bicyclists live or ride in the town, which has been the location of high-level cycling races such as Canada's 2010 National Road Championships. Popular restaurants include House of Goody's, a Chinese restaurant, Florida Pizza Steakhouse, which features vegan-friendly options and those with meat, and Marci's Bar and Grill.
